I literally just downloaded the app a couple of minutes ago and being asked to rate it. I will start with 1 out of 5 stars for now and will update later as I keep using the app over time! But, in general, thanks to the app developers for contributing to the constant distractions and notification fatigue that seems to be plaguing our modern technological experiences now days!!
  • Better mapping apps out there

So onX bought out Powder Project’s tracks and put them on their map. I have misgivings about putting these lines on a map for people to follow who may not have much backcountry knowledge. Regardless the maps themselves are just ok. CalTopo and Gaia have much better detail. If you rely on someone else’s gpx tracks for your ski tours onX is for you. But if you want the most detailed, accurate maps to plan your own tours, look elsewhere.

I love everything about this app except that there is some bug that is not allowing the maps to load. It seems to think that I don’t have cell reception or Wi-Fi connection even when I do. Maps are an unreadable low resolution quality. Would love to get this fixed.

I’ve used Hiking Project and others for years. I find onX far more complicated and less helpful. I bought a subscription because a teaser on Hiking Project suggested that I’d be able to use my Apple Watch. But that’s not true.

Map won’t render, no trails showing on map, no climbs either. Virtually useless for me as of right now

I’ve tried a lot of maps. This one really crushes. Shows trails caltopo doesn’t have that lead right to the crag. If you rock climb, this will definitely be your go-to because it also shows the routes from Mtn Project. Hiking and biking trails also look very accurate so far. And I like their clean map overlays. The 3D mode also looks great for scouting backcountry ski trips. Just do the 7 day trial and you’ll see how good it is.
  • Not the one for me

I used this app for multiple backcountry trips as well as day hikes this summer. The offline maps work well. However this app lacks basic features like the ability to quickly estimate distances on the trail you are on, or display a elevation profile. These features are available on the free Hiking project app which this is replacing. I also had repeated issues with the app crashing. I will not be renewing my subscription.
